About David
Growing up in a household of artists and engineers goes some way to explaining how David Vazey manages to blend these two disciplines together so beautifully in his magnificent metalwork.
As a young boy David was fascinated with creating things: model aeroplanes, boats and cars. As he got older he turned his talents to making metal animals, birds and snakes – before leaving school to follow in his father’s footsteps as an apprentice Fitter and Turner with the freezing works – and spending his spare time building houses.
When it came time to build his own house david was influenced by his Israeli wife, and began to share her passion for Moorish design. Amidst the beautiful rainforest of West Auckland they set about creating their own home over 16 years. Like everything he did, David started from nothing and built a masterpiece.
Word spread of his incredible workmanship, and in particular, the stunning metalwork. It didn’t take too long before David started producing metalwork on a commercial basis – today it adorns the homes of well-known New Zealanders like Graham Hart, Paul Huljich and John Hawkesby.
His research into Moorish architecture ked him to Spain where he studied the work of gaudi; and France where he could admire the master of Art Deco ironwork:Edgar Brandt. In the Middle East and North Africa he learned about traditional style and craftmanship – skills he stands by today that ensure once his work is complete it will last a lifetime.
David likes to visually create his work, sticking whenever he can to the old traditions of the masters. His work has a beautifully organic feel to it, flowing freely and taking it’s direction from nature.
A perfectionist, david’s work has stood the test of time. In a world of machine manufacturing he has stayed true to the integrity of his beliefs and creates everything himself by hand.
As an accomplished flamenco guitarist, powerboat racing champion and awarded game fisherman with a couple of hand-made cars in the garage – there’s also a lot more to the man than just coveted metalwork!
